On January 21st, 2024, The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (MDTCL), in collaboration with the immigration department and Royal Malaysian Police, executed a well-coordinated blitz raid on around a dozen retailers at Petaling Street, fondly known as ‘China Town’ among locals and tourists alike. This operation was particularly challenging, given Petaling Street’s notorious reputation, but it proved to be a success due to the meticulous planning and cooperation among government agencies and brand representatives.
The raid resulted in the seizure of several thousand counterfeit products spanning luxury fashion, lifestyle fashion, fragrances, and sporting goods. Two local infringers were apprehended and are set to face charges under the Malaysian Trademarks Act 2019. Additionally, the immigration department detained several illegal immigrants involved in illicit activities at Petaling Street, including the trade of counterfeit goods.
This initiative marks a promising start to 2024 in the fight against counterfeiting. Kudos to the enforcement agencies and the dedicated GTS team for their exemplary work. Here’s to more successful initiatives throughout the year to keep counterfeiters on their toes.
