May 2019 was a busy yet successful period for GTS and the Ministry of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs (MDTCA) despite being the holy fasting month of Ramadhan, GTS together with the MDTCA conducted good enforcement actions on warehouses and hardcore retailers at Petaling Street (China Town) in Malaysia where a total of 4 offenders were arrested. Some were granted bail while some were denied bail on the grounds that they had invalid travel documents. The counterfeit trade in Malaysia always fronts foreign nationals including those who have invalid travel documents to conduct the daily business.
In the past, the products would be seized and a fine imposed however most of the traders could easily slip away as they are not local residents and return to conduct the business without fear. The recent move by the Director-General of MDTCA, Dato’ Iskandar Halim to go down hard by arresting anyone found peddling or distributing counterfeit products and lay charges quickly has definitely started to send a strong message to the counterfeiters. This exercise will continue until the visibility of counterfeit products is brought under control particularly in the major shopping belts of Kuala Lumpur. # # #anticounterfeit #brandprotection
